Have you ever felt afraid to share your faith? Specifically as business owners, it is easy to worry that a client may not agree with your perspectives and… leave without purchasing. The fear of missing out on the opportunity because of your beliefs is a real struggle for many business owners. However, this week… Leah Payne tells us exactly why sharing our faith and keeping it prevalent will give us a greater purpose while actually pushing us closer to success. I’m honored to have Leah on the blog this week and hope that you’ll leave her some love in the comments after reading this amazing article. – Amanda
How has faith impacted your business? Does it provide a greater purpose for your business?
“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” – Colossians 3:1-4
Oh Colossians, my favorite book in the Bible! I love how Paul talks to us about the preeminence and supremacy of Christ. He encourages us to walk with the Lord, warns us against the philosophies of man, and charges us to remain steadfast. But out of all these amazing passages, Colossians 3:2 is my favorite: “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
As an entrepreneur and a child of the most high God, faith in my business is important. I can remember in the early days of my photography career, I was so careful not to be too explicit about posting religious terms or references on social media. I would tiptoe around topics I so desired to share, simply because I thought my audience would stop paying attention or worse…unfollow me.
Oh dear heart, what a mistake!
My faith, my life, my family, my business, they are all intermingled because my life is a whole. One day I was sitting, probably drinking a lovely beverage known as coffee, and it hit me, “I have to be real!” I have to be real with my audience, real with myself, and most importantly, real with the Lord! Tiptoeing around my faith was doing no good for anyone.
The moment I decided to be real, my faith was expressed openly and without hesitation! I felt like a mask had fallen off and I was becoming my true self! I also felt like I was honoring my sweet Jesus more than I ever had! And whether or not I lost followers, I do not know because I started to gain more! My honesty and openness with my audience was what they wanted, and it was a benefit to more than just me.
So why do I tell you all of this history? Well as entrepreneurs who love Jesus, faith in our business can make a great impact! There have been several times I would send out an Instagram post with a little scripture woven in and people would respond with, “Thank you so much! I needed to hear this badly!” All because I posted a little picture and some Scripture! Oh the power of the cross!
This has given our business a greater purpose!
Our desire for our photography is to document life in a way that puts the beauty and humanity of the moment in focus. So as entrepreneurs, being our true selves and remaining open about our faith shows our humanity to our clients and helps them open up to the image of God within themselves. When that happens, God’s image shines through all the brighter and we get to capture that! As Christians, we recognize that we are all made in the image of God. We all bear His beauty, and when we photograph that and share that truth with our clients we then, in turn, share His truth with the world. And at the end of the day, we pray this truth will reveal Christ to their hearts.
Letting our faith be known is freeing, scary yes, but most importantly freeing. Our lives are hidden “with Christ in God” and our minds must be set on Him at all times. If we take our minds off of our Savior to think about our business, we’ve lost the point of our business. We are to do all things for His glory and honor, giving thanks to Him in the process (Colossians 3:17). When I take pictures for His glory, connect with clients for His glory, paint a picture for His glory, meet a goal for His glory, my life begins to be filled with His light at all times! And the same can be true for you!
Everything we have belongs to Him.
Our businesses, our families, our breath, and we must steward these things well for Him. In doing so, our business is given greater purpose! We have more meaning for what we are doing. And I don’t know about you, but when I have to stay up late to finish editing a session when all I really want to do is sleep, I’m tempted to half-donkey it. But then Holy Spirit rushes in and reminds me that I need to give my best and do this for His glory! So I straighten up in my chair, thank Him for this business He has blessed me with, turn up the worship music, and finish the task!
Colossians 3:12-15 tells us, “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.”
What a way to live! We are not only to heed these words in our walk with the Lord but in every area of life! If we live this way, with compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, what an ethical and positive business we will have! People will be drawn to our harmony and the peace of Christ that dwells in our hearts. For me, this is a game changer. Not only am I to work my business out for the glory of the Lord but I must live in harmony with others. My prayer would be that in so doing, the world would come to know our good and gracious Savior!
So as you go about your life, chasing after your dreams, and building your business, be encouraged to keep your eyes on Christ, work for His glory, and live as He would to the audience around you! I guarantee your life will change for the better and when it does, thankfulness will continue to flow from you heart!
Blessings and peace,
